"Iwashina-tate" means
During the late Edo and Meiji periods, when amateur sumo wrestling was popular, the head of the cheering squad, feeling that the referee's decision against Iwashina's wrestler was unfair, shouted "Iwashina, stand up!" and Iwashina rose to his feet fiercely. With their arms crossed, they demonstrated the tenacity of the people of Iwashina, showing that they would not back down even an inch when necessary and would not yield to injustice. "Iwashina Rise Up" became a major guiding principle for Iwashina education, and its spirit is still carried on today.

Culturally Important Iwashina School

Iwashina School, a nationally designated important cultural property, is the oldest elementary school in the Izu district that incorporates Western-style architecture such as balconies and temple-style architecture that makes use of the Namako Wall. Construction began in Meiji 12/4 and was completed in Meiji 13/9. The building has an impressive Western-style design and is known as the second oldest school after the former Kaichi School (Meiji 9), a national treasure in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. increase.

When construction began in Meiji 12, there was a great deal of enthusiasm for the promotion of education in Matsuzaki, and donations were collected for the construction of a new school building. Total construction cost was 2,630 yen, and more than 40% of that is donated. At that time, Tonaga Sato Genkichi and others proceeded with the new construction plan, and it was designed by Iwashina Village master carpenters Ushitaro Kikuchi and Kyugoro Takagi.
The plaque reading “Iwashina School” at the front entrance of the building was written by Sanetomi Sanjo, then Daijo-daijin (Grand Minister of State). It is said that Chohachi Irie carved the dragon on top of it by borrowing the master carpenter's "only".

* Dajo-daijin is the supreme chief minister of the Meiji Restoration government. (Equivalent to the current Prime Minister.)
In addition, in the west room of the guest room on the second floor, there is a crimson wall that expresses the rising sun in the alcove, greenery is arranged in the side floor to express a pine tree, and a thousand cranes made by the master craftsman Chohachi Irie are in the transom. , Each bird is drawn in a different shape, and you can see them flying toward the sunrise as if they were coming out of the wall. This thousand paper cranes is said to be a masterpiece of Chohachi's work that skillfully fuses plastering and color techniques.

From Heisei 4/11 over 2 years, the renovation work was completed, and it was restored to its original form from Meiji 13.
